WooCommerce is the one where a single wrong dropdown — Permissions left on Read — costs people an afternoon. Lesson 4.1 is the one to watch twice.

4.1 Generating the API keysLesson 4.1 of course 4 4 min

Steps

  • In WordPress as an administrator: WooCommerce → Settings → Advanced → REST API.
  • Press Add key. Description, an admin User, and set Permissions to Read/Write.
  • Press Generate API key and copy the Consumer key (ck_...) and Consumer secret (cs_...) immediately — the secret is shown once.

Common mistakeLeaving Permissions on Read, which is the default. Read-only keys fail silently — nothing errors, products just never export.

4.5 The four errors you will meetLesson 4.5 of course 4 4 min

Steps

  • 401 — wrong or revoked keys. Generate a new Read/Write pair and update the shop.
  • 404 — wrong store URL, or permalinks set to Plain. In WordPress set Settings → Permalinks to Post name.
  • Export does nothing at all — almost always a read-only key.
  • Connection blocked — a security plugin such as Wordfence stopping REST requests.

Common mistakeRegenerating keys when the real problem is permalinks.
